January is a time when people typically set intentions or goals for the new year.
Similar to two years ago (2023), our national survey results show that approximately one-half (48%) of Canadians have made resolutions for the new year, though these results continue to show an increase from 2022 when just one-third of the population had made resolutions. Of those who made resolutions for 2025, seven in ten (71%; down 4 points from 2023) say their goals are health-related, six in ten (58%; down 1 point) indicate their goal is financial, three in ten (32%; up 4 points) cite a relationship goal, and one-quarter (27%; up 1 point) report a hobby-related goal.
Across demographics, Quebec residents are more likely than other Canadians to have made a resolution for 2025. Additionally, younger Canadians – that is, those 34 and under – are most likely to have made a resolution, with likelihood decreasing with age. In particular, Canadians ages 55 or older are less likely to make resolutions related to finances or relationships, but equally likely as residents in other age groups to set health-related goals.

Furthermore, we asked Canadians how confident they are about accomplishing their goal for this year. Positively, seven in ten (71%) indicate they are confident they will achieve their intended resolution, a notable increase in confidence levels compared to 2023. Confidence levels are similar across regions, genders, and age groups although residents with a household income of $100,000 or more are more likely to express confidence compared to those with a lower household income.
